On the afternoon of May 12th, Fu Bojie, academician from Chese Academy of Sciences, and vice president of Chinese Ecological Society arrived at our university and made a report named “Traits and tasks for geography during the new period”. The report was hosted by Professor Liu Peilin and leaders including Wang Peng, Zhou Jun, Deng Yunyuan and over 200 students and teachers also attended the report meeting.

Fu began his report from the basic traits and tasks of geography, combing with the developing trend of geography and global issues like “plans for the future planet”. He pointed out the research focus, traits and direction for Geography in the future, raised some strategic issues in geography and made some examples with concrete issues occurring nowadays. In the meantime, he also introduced 9 strategic areas Chinese geography should focus on in the future. Such as the protection of ecological diversity, climate change and so on.

Eventually, he talked about talent training of geography in China. By analyzing the differences between the training system of geography in universities home and abroad, he pointed out some problems existing in talent training of geography in Chinese universities: firstly, training in critical thinking in geography and theoretical construction are far from enough; secondly, curriculum diversity develops too slowly; thirdly, the setting of the discipline lacks teaching of global issues and dynamic changes in the development of society; fourthly, the research areas in China is quite limited comparing with foreign opponents of Chinese universities; fifthly, more microcosmic study should be carried out; sixthly, the present training mode can not meet the need of inter-disciplines.

In the Q and A round, Fu also discussed the concept and content of “future city”, role of GIS in geography and its development, Chinese Human geography and so on with teachers and students.

In the meanwhile, the academician also encouraged students to deeply study secret of geography, lay a good foundation for the subject, and make academic innovation actively, contributing our knowledge and wisdom for the sustainable development of China and the world.
