With the approval of the Ministry of Education, Hengyang Normal University (HYNU) was the combination of former Hengyang Teachers College and Hengyang Education College in March, 1999. Then former Hunan Third Teacher Training School was merged in February, 2001.

Hengyang Normal University can date back to Hunan Government Authorized Teachers Academy in 1904, which was renamed Provincial Third Teacher Training School in 1912 and Hengyang Teachers College in 1958. She was renamed Hunan Third Teacher Training School in 1962 where many old-generation innovators studied or worked, including Mao Zedong(the founder of the People's Republic of China), Jiang Xianyun, Huang Kecheng, and Jiang Hua. She was approved by the Ministry of Education to be one of the first teacher training schools in new China in 1958. Then she was renamed Hengyang Teachers College in 1993. Hengyang Education College was established in 1979.

More than 100,000 graduates of these colleges made their achievements in basic education and local economic construction. After the consolidation, Hengyang Normal University is further characterized by her teachers training education.
